Educating African Americans in Charlotte, NC (1920-2020)

Description:  The Past Is Prologue Digital Humanities Youth Exhibition captures the educational experience, past and present, of Blacks in Charlotte, NC. This invaluable initiative bridges history with youth arts to build understanding and empower action in our community. The project will consist of collaboration with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, I AM not the MEdia, Inc., and Firm
Foundation’s summer program to develop work by students that capture the minoritized experience in
the past and today's educational system through digital art and photography. *Recently Funded.

TEENS & SOCIAL MEDIA TRAVELING EXHIBIT

Description:  To support social action in our community, The Teens and Social Media Traveling Photo
Exhibit provides dialogue in public spaces with youth and families on the impact of social media on their lives. Photos in the exhibit were developed by teens in four Charlotte High Schools and will be displayed in four public libraries and two park and recreation sites in 2020. (Exhibit Launch Postponed Due to COVID 19)

THE CYBER CITIZEN

SERIES

Anderson, J.L. (2018). Journalism and Media: Fostering Informed Citizens. NC Humanities Council ($6,840). Role: Grant Writer and Project Oversight

Description:  “Cyber Citizens Series” program provided three Charlotte high schools, West Charlotte High School, Vance High School and West Mecklenburg High School, each with six educational workshops. Participating teens learned about the media's influence on mental health, social media safety, cyber-bullying and fake news. The series concluded with an exhibit of photo advocacy campaigns designed by workshop participants to help spread awareness to other teens.
